Start with the number, in mg/L. Test strips or your municipal annual report give you hardness as CaCO₃. Below 120 mg/L, skip this page and read the filter guide instead. From 120 to 180 mg/L a descaler or point-of-use option covers most complaints. Above 180 mg/L, whole-house ion exchange is the treatment that actually removes the minerals.
Size by grain capacity. Multiply daily household use (roughly 250 to 300 litres per person) by hardness in grains per gallon (divide mg/L by 17.1) to get daily grain load, then pick a unit that regenerates about once a week at that load. A family of four on 250 mg/L water lands in the 30,000 to 48,000 grain range. Oversizing slightly beats undersizing, since constant regeneration wears resin and wastes salt.
Check certifications and the control valve. NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard covering residential cation-exchange softeners, verifying capacity and material safety claims. A metered, demand-initiated valve regenerates on actual water use; timer-based valves regenerate on schedule whether needed or not and cost more in salt over the unit's life.
Insist on a bypass valve. A bypass lets you route water around the softener for outdoor taps and service work, and installers can also run an unsoftened line to the kitchen cold tap, which Health Canada recommends for households on sodium-restricted diets.
